Acute Injury Advice
There is often confusion about when to use ice and when to use heat. Using either at the wrong time can possibly cause problems. There is an acronym used for injuries that are in the first 48 hours. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation - RICE
After the first 48 hours any fractures will be apparent. When an injury is past the 48 hour mark and any swelling has been controlled it is important to re-establish good blood flow to the area. This is when heat should be applied.
With either, ice or heat, it is recommended to apply them in 20 minute increments.
20 on, 20 off.
As always, if you suspect a fracture or break, get to an emergency facility.
